Semisolid forging process was performed on A380 aluminium alloy. Cross‐sectional SEM and EBSD observations were carried out on the surface of the alloy to observe any modification on the grain size.
実験 / Experimental
Semisolid forged A380 aluminium specimen was prepared for metallurgical analysis. The specimen was grinded using silicon carbide grinding paper of multiple grit (200, 400, 800, 1200, 2400, and 4000) before cleaned and air dried. Subsequently, the specimen was polished using polishing cloth with alumina suspension until mirror-finish. Metallurgical analysis include SEM and SEM-EBSD was performed on the specimen accordingly. The test was done based on the initially identified crystallographic plane of the phases within the aluminium specimen using XRD test. The raw file of the SEM and EBSD was then analyzed and extracted using Matlab software to generate the required images.
結果と考察 / Results and Discussion
The semisolid forging process offers the capability to refine the microstructure of A380 aluminium alloy. The refinement include the secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS), eutectic phases, and grain size. Fig.1 shows the characteristic of the grain size at the middle and at the edge of the specimen analyzed using SEM-EBSD. The result dictates that the grain size are considerably finer at the center of the specimen compared to the edge of the specimen near the cavity wall. It can be deduced that the area adjacent to the cavity wall is the last-to-solidify region during the solidification process of A380 aluminium using semisolid forging process. Therefore, the result provides a visual information of the melt solidification flow during semisolid forging process.
